Wuqi Hydrological Imagery_Shan Shuei Community Center

The development of Wuqi District began with the reclamation during the Qing Dynasty. At the end of the 18th century, Wuqi was called Wuqa Port due to the alluvial outwash of five natural streams. The Wuqi Old Street and the site adjacent to the coastline developed linearly. With the changes of the coastline and the siltation of river channels, moist soil has been brought to the grass field where the site is located, and the residents have also reclaimed it into paddy fields. The scenery of paddy fields is a trace of the close connection between the community and hydrology. Hydrology brings us three impressions of this land: folk belief, agriculture and industry, thus forming a different interface with the natural environment.

The building responds to the paddy field scenery around the site in a linear volume configuration, responds to the publicity among students, elders and the temple through the sunken square, and reduces the height of the building to relieve the pressure on the surrounding old communities. The rainwater atrium is placed inside, hoping to awaken people's awareness that hydrology and agriculture are the collective memory of Wuqi with an attitude of integrating with the landscape.
