West District Model Market Revitalization in Taichung City
Traditional markets, gradually vanishing within the cityscape, have become dark shells in the urban environment. With their linear arrangement, people tend to confine their activities to the street-facing areas, leaving an impression of dampness, narrowness, and dirtiness associated with traditional markets. As the ground floor declines, the upper levels of the buildings also continue to hollow out.
The attempt is made to introduce individual bubbles as interventions, creating exterior corridors that connect the ground floor with the upper levels of the buildings. The interior spaces are designed to accommodate existing column and beam structures as well as human activities. By bringing people and light into Taichung's West District model market, the aim is to preserve the characteristics of market wandering while creating new urban public spaces
