Tainan Old Fish Market Extension
The site is located in the Tainan Old Fish Market in the West Central District of Tainan City. The north side of the market is Tainan Spring, which was originally designed by Li Zuyuan as a Chinatown. It was later rebuilt by MVRDV into an urban water plaza and commercial facilities. On the south side is the 2-4 storey residential area and collective housing. On the west side is the newly opened Jinhua Bridge after the demolition of the Tainan Canal and Chinatown. On the east side is a business hotel. The old fish market building was completed in 1936.
The construction has its historical importance. It is adjacent to Minsheng Road on the other side of the canal. Because Japan opened up Anping Port during the Japanese colonial period, ships can only reach the Tainan Canal opened in 1926 (canal blind Section) and the "Old Fish Market", and the "Original Tainan Canal Customs", which is only more than 200 meters away, has been listed as a municipal monument. These places have witnessed the history of canal transportation.
The design focuses on issues such as the form of the roof, the fragmentation of scale, the new urban facade, the integration of structural systems, and the relationship between old and new buildings. Commercial activities and entertainment facilities in Tainan rely on the shade of arcades and canopies to resist the summer heat and wind and rain. This is used as the "prototype" of the space for design ideas, breaking through the boundary between Tainan Spring and the old fish market, and improving the relationship between old and new buildings.
